Despite having an average of fewer than 3,000 students, the school is consistently ranked among the top schools in the state, if not the nation. The school is also a member of the patriot league in the NCAA division 1.
The school was first established in 1820 when the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York opened the school after being granted charter a year earlier. In 1823, the school was incorporated with the Baptist Education Society and changed its name to the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution. In 1846, the school changed its name to Madison University, and in 1850 the school was renamed once again as the University of Rochester. In 1890, Madison University changed its name to Colgate University in recognition of the Colgate family and its contributions to the school. In 1970, Colgate became coeducational.
Aside from the regular campus courses, the school also offers 22 semester long off-campus study groups each term. This includes programs in China, Australia, Japan, India, many other Western European countries. Almost two-thirds of Colgate undergraduates study abroad at some point in their education. Around 95% of Colgate seniors graduate and most alumni proceed to graduate schools in administration, engineering, law, medicine, and also to financial, administrative or scientific occupations.
More than a quarter of the students are involved in a varsity sport, and 80% of students are involved in some form of varsity, club, or athletics. The school features 25 varsity teams, over 40 club sports teams, and 18 different intramural sports. The school colors are maroon and white and the school nickname are the Raiders.
